Human hair wigs require the same careful care as natural hair. With the right routine, they retain their shine, softness, and original shape for a long time. Below, we show you step by step how to properly wash, store, and style a human hair wig – gently, effectively, and perfectly suited for everyday life.

Why is proper wig care so important?

A professional skincare routine protects:

  • the hair structure

  • the natural shine

  • the longevity of the wig

  • the high-quality appearance

Beginners especially underestimate how much storage, washing technique, and drying affect the result. Our guide will help you avoid typical mistakes.

Overview of the most important areas of care

  • storage

  • Washing frequency & preparation

  • Washing & Care

  • Drying & Styling

  • Special instructions for long, fine hair textures

1. Storing the wig

Human hair wigs should always be stored on a wig head or stand . These maintain the shape, allow for proper ventilation, and make washing and styling easier. Be sure to choose a model that stands stably and optimally supports the wig's shape.

2. How often should you wash a real hair wig?

On average, every 2-3 weeks . More frequent washing may be advisable in hot weather, with sweating, or with daily use.

3. Preparation for washing

  1. Place the wig on the wig head and secure it to the side.

  2. Gently detangle from the ends upwards using a wide-toothed comb or wig brush .

  3. Make sure that the knots are completely untied.

4. The correct washing method

Pre-wash

  • Moisten with lukewarm water from top to bottom .

  • Do not hold under strong running water to avoid tangling.

  • Never apply to the base of the knot to protect the knotting points.

  • Leave on for 10-15 minutes, depending on the product.

  • Rinse thoroughly.

  • Optional: Leave-in conditioner for added softness.

Remove water

  • Carefully remove the wig and gently squeeze out the water.

  • Place it in a towel and press gently – do not rub.

  • Real hair can be styled like your own hair.

    • Styling products

Always use heat protection and avoid high temperatures to protect the hair structure in the long term.

Tip: Especially with fine hair, curlers create natural, gentle waves – completely without heat.

7. Aftercare for extra shine

Work a very small amount of high-quality hair oil into the ends of your hair (not the roots). This will make your hair soft, protected, and look healthy. Use only a lightweight hair oil! A cheap hair oil can make your hair look greasy and heavy.

8. Extra care tips for long, fine human hair wigs

Fine, long hair is sensitive to humidity, fog, and wind. Here's how to prevent frizz and tangles:

  • Regularly and gently detangle your hair while you're out and about.

  • Use a leave-in or anti-frizz spray.

  • In windy conditions, loosely tie your hair into a braid or plait.

  • Avoid friction from hoods, scarves or jackets

  • After rain or high humidity

    • arrange with your fingers

    • Allow to dry slightly

    • Comb through carefully while it is still slightly damp.

An inexpensive hair oil can make hair look greasy and heavy.

What care products does a real hair wig need?

Human hair wigs require particularly gentle and targeted care, as the hair no longer naturally retains moisture. The right products maintain the quality, softness, and longevity of the wig.

Essential care products:

  • Use conditioner after every wash to seal, smooth, and protect hair from drying out.

  • Hair mask every 2-3 washes for intensive care. For bleached or very fine human hair, we recommend more frequent use.

  • Leave-in care suitable for daily use. Provides suppleness, protection and a well-groomed appearance without rinsing.

  • Heat protection products are only necessary when styling with heat. Generally, we recommend avoiding heat as much as possible to protect the hair structure.

Important note: Care products must not come into contact with the knots or the base of the wig , as this could cause the knots to loosen and impair the durability of the wig.

Conclusion

A real hair wig can look beautiful for years – provided it is properly cared for. This guide will give you a clear, practical daily routine that will keep your hair system healthy, shiny, and retaining its shape.
